All Out for NO WAR ON IRAN during AIPAC Convention

No War On Iran!

The drumbeat for war will reach a fever pitch when AIPAC, with 10,000 attendees, holds its annual policy conference on March 4. The bellicose stance of keynote speaker Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will push our nation closer to a catastrophic war.

Come show that the American people demand “Diplomacy, Not War.” We’ll have an open mic, so if you have a personal story or message that you want to share about Iran, come prepared to speak your mind.

When: Sunday, March 4th, 11:00am – 2:00pm
Where: Mt. Vernon Place (corner of Massachusetts and 9th)

Take action now: sign this petition calling on President Obama to Take War With Iran “Off the Table”!

An Open Letter to Student Delegates at the 2012 AIPAC Policy Conference

An Open Letter to Student Delegates at the 2012 AIPAC Policy Conference
subtitle: From Student Advocates for Justice, Peace and Human Rights

Dear Student AIPAC Delegates,

You are a community leader on your campus and your peers look up to you. Your influence is why AIPAC has invested so much money in having you attend this convention.

This weekend is a grand effort to paint a rosy picture of Israel, one that ignores ongoing human rights violations. You will hear from various important political players, all slated to speak about the good Israel does. They will give the impression that Israel’s values and actions promote peace and security in the world, and that anyone who questions Israel is aligned with terrorism and instability. Indeed, this AIPAC conference puts all its efforts into dazzling you – whom they assume to be an impressionable student with little knowledge of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict – with its political influence.

We, students and concerned citizens throughout the country, disagree with the AIPAC narrative that Israel’s values and actions promote peace and security in the world. In fact, we believe that the Israeli government’s lengthy track record of violating international law, ignoring the human rights of Palestinians, and using excessive military force against civilians is what promotes instability and violence.

We invite you to join with us, and the people of Israel and Palestine and throughout the world—including Jews, Christians, Muslims and others—who stand for peace, equality, self-determination and democracy for all regardless of religion, ethnicity, or the color of one’s skin.

We’d like to bring a few facts to your attention:

Will You Occupy AIPAC?

Dear friends,

We are excited to announce that plans for OCCUPY AIPAC are under way and we hope you will join us March 2-6 in Washington DC.

With the Occupy movement that has swept the country demanding social and economic justice, many have concluded that AIPAC—the powerful pro-Israeli government lobby that distorts U.S. policy in the Middle East— is a mandatory “occupy target”. Adbusters, the magazine that issued the initial visionary call for the takeover of Wall St. on September 17th, has declared: “The time has come for the Occupy Movement to demand an end to the Occupation of Palestine… We need a hashtag, #occupyAIPAC” (Kalle Lasn).

Timed to coincide with the annual AIPAC policy conference in March 2012, the Occupy AIPAC summit will be a long weekend of teach-ins, cultural performances, protests and creative direct actions, and a sneak preview of the forthcoming film Roadmap to Apartheid. Co-sponsored by The Nation, the Institute of Policy Studies, CODEPINK and Just Foreign Policy, the Saturday conference will feature educational panels on Iran, Palestine, the Arab Uprisings and the Occupy Movement (see the list of speakers). The Occupy AIPAC summit is endorsed and supported by a variety of organizations including the Interfaith Peace Builders (IFPB), the US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), Jewish Voice for Peace, Students for Justice in Palestine chapters, and over 120 other groups.

Right now AIPAC is trying to drag us into a disastrous conflict with Iran, just as they had pushed for the Iraq war. We must show our opposition by exposing AIPAC and standing against a war with Iran. AIPAC’s underhanded tactics and their manipulation of our political process destroys the possibility of a just peace in the Middle East. Recent public criticisms of the Israel lobby make the call to Occupy AIPAC all the more relevant.

Now is the time to make a large, people-powered push to show our opposition to the stranglehold the Israel lobby continues to hold over our government.

Register for the conference or support this summit with a donation. Your outreach and presence is critical to help us ensure a strong turnout, because now is the time to Occupy AIPAC, not Palestine!

In solidarity,
Medea, Rae, Alli and Sasha

In addition to peace and justice groups around the country, we are reaching out to Occupy communities for support and participation (see the Occupy AIPAC GA resolution). If your group would like to endorse or join this effort, please email occupyaipac@gmail.com.

General Assembly Resolution: Occupy AIPAC!

Corporate Flag of America

Corporate Flag of America (via Adbusters)

As the Occupy Movement articulates demands for social and economic justice in the United States and around the world, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has become a mandatory target.

AIPAC and its dozens of affiliate groups through which it funnels campaign donations have our Congress in their thrall. Not only is this stranglehold unacceptable, but it also endangers our country as many of AIPAC’s purported policies are out of alignment with our national security interests.

AIPAC’s lobbying has resulted in Israel’s receiving 3 billions dollars a year in U.S. military aid. Our tax dollars are used to purchase U.S. weapons, which are used to police a brutal military occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. U.S. made and subsidized helicopters, weaponized bulldozers, and tear gas canisters are used against Palestinian civilians to devastating effect.

Is your congressperson going to Israel instead of working in district during the recess?
Take action!

1. Tweet Congress with this message: Represent America, not Israel!

2. Send a letter to the editor of your local letter expressing your outrage if your Representative is going to Israel.

3. Visit your Congressperson’s office this month during the August Recess (when your Rep should be home).

Does Your Congressperson Represent You — or Israel?

9 August 2011 | AlterNet

In this time of economic austerity, when jobs are being slashed and Americans are fearful about their future, the Congressional recess is the time for our elected representatives to be home in their districts, reaching out to their constituents and servicing the people they are paid to represent. Instead, this August one out of every five representatives will be taking a junket to Israel, compliments of an affiliate of the Israel lobby AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) but still clocked in on the taxpayer’s dime.

Americans who have lost their jobs and seen their life savings evaporate because Congress can’t seem to get it together deserve an explanation of how this crisis will be solved. Following the recent debt debacle, the public is hungry for information about the mysterious 12-person “super committee” that will slash over one trillion dollars from the federal budget. But instead of opening their doors to their constituents, 81 members of Congress will be getting briefings from Israeli government officials, touring historic religious sites, and perhaps “seeking a salty dip in the Dead Sea.” Representative Steny Hoyer, who is leading the Democratic delegation, said he is pleased members of Congress have this opportunity “to gain a deeper understanding of the issues involved in increasing stability in the region.” One has to wonder whether our elected officials are more concerned about the stability of Israel or the well-being of American families.

Demonstration Outside the Department of Justice

On May 23, Move Over AIPAC marched on the Justice Department with new information about why AIPAC should register under the 1938 Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Individuals presented their own personalized letters for regulation at the main entrance. Heather Hunt, head of the Foreign Agents Registration Act unit at the Justice Department, invited this new input on the possible registration of AIPAC as a foreign agent in a May 18, 2011 letter which was read out loud during the action.

Watch videos of our demonstrations and send a complaint of your own to the head of the FARA section and Attorney General Eric Holder. Download, personalize and mail this letter urging regulation of AIPAC as a foreign agent.

You can also download and mail a complaint to the IRS insisting AIPAC be investigated for tax fraud.
Download and mail a pre-filled form with CODEPINK’s information or personalize a complaint.

Tell Obama to Get Out of Bed with AIPAC

It seems that no matter how abusive the Israeli government gets, as it was last weekend when it killed protesters during the al-Nakba demonstrations, it–along with its U.S. lobby– gets rewarded. This week’s reward is that President Obama will not only meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu during his U.S. visit, but Obama will also speak at the AIPAC (American-Israel Public Affairs Committee) policy conference. If you are appalled that President Obama is pandering to the pro-occupation lobby, send a letter to Obama today to express your outrage and urge him to get out of bed with AIPAC.

Obama must tell Netanyahu to negotiate with democratically chosen Palestinian representatives, cease settlement construction, and stop using violence against unarmed demonstrators. Now is the time for Obama to stand up to Netanyahu and insist that Israel takes serious steps to resume negotiations. Will you write to Obama today?

Palestinians deserve the same democratic rights that people all over the Arab world are fighting for. Netanyahu and AIPAC represent a one-sided policy of ‘Israel right or wrong’ that is no longer tenable. We must ask Obama to be on our side: the side of peace and justice.
